Your Solution to Last-Minute Gifts
Only one evening to knit a hat, with a pompom? No problem! With this super-fast working and easy knit beanie pattern on circular needles, you'll be ready for some last-minute gifts. The pattern uses knit and purl stitches and features two colors and an optional pompom.
I'd like to pretend I'm totally on top of things and have never had to make a gift for someone in one evening, but that's not true. Some situations where you too may need to knit a hat last-minute:
- You forgot to buy your sister a birthday present.
- A friend is visiting from somewhere warm and is totally unprepared for the -7 degree Celsius (20 degree Fahrenheit) winter temperatures.
- You lost your hat and need one for tomorrow's commute to work.
- It's Christmas Even and you just realized you left someone off your Christmas list.
- You want to make matching hats for a family photo, and don't want to spend weeks on them.
I'm sure you've got your own reasons. If not, bookmark this pattern, because something is sure to pop up eventually!

Before you Start this Easy Knit Beanie Pattern on Circular Needles
Materials
- 6.5mm and 8mm circular knitting needles. I use this cheap set of circular needles. If you don't have circular needles of the right size, you can also use double-pointed needles. The pattern is made in 4 equal parts on purpose. If you're confused about all these types of needles, you should read this guide.
- I used the grey and red Royal yarn from Zeeman. To get a thicker yarn that would work up faster (one evening target, remember?) I knitted this hat using 2 different threads of yarn at the same time. You need half a skein of each. I have used the same technique in His Scarf pattern which you can see more clearly as I used 2 different colors.
- Tapestry needle to weave in the ends. I love this set as it has different eye sizes for different yarn thickness and it comes in a small tube which is very convenient so I don't lose them.
Because the yarn I used is not available everywhere, and I know how painful it is to try to find equivalent yarn which will give you the same effect I have selected a few equivalent yarns for you. I haven't tried them out myself, but they look so pretty, check them out!
- Lion Brand Wool-Ease They have this yarn in about 20 colors, I'm sure you'll fall in love with more than one.
- La Mia Just Wool
-
elann Wool Mate - RED HEART Super Saver Yarn. This yarn also exists in more than 60 colors.
Abbreviations
- k = knit
- p = purl
- st = stitch
- k2tog = knit 2 stitches together
Knit Beanie Size
You can easily adapt the size by adding or removing a multiple of 4 stitches.
Gauge is not imporant for this pattern.
The Actual Free Hat Knitting Pattern
-
On 6.5mm circular needles, cast on 64 stitches in the red color yarn. Use 2 threads of yarn at the same time for this beanie.
-
K1, p1 around for 15 cm.
-
Switch to 8mm circular needles and the grey color yarn (2 threads of yarn). Knit for 10cm.
-
We will now start the decreases to form the hat shape.
*k14, k2tog* repeat 4 times <60 st>
*k13, k2tog* repeat 4 times <56 st>
*k12, k2tog* repeat 4 times <52 st> -
Switch back to the red color yarn and keep decreasing.
*k4, k2tog, k5, k2tog* repeat 4 times <44 st>
*k3, k2tog, k4, k2tog* repeat 4 times <36 st>
Knit 1 round without decreasing
*k2, k2tog, k3, k2tog* repeat 4 times <28 st> -
With a tapestry needle, pull through all the remaining stitches. Pull tight and weave in the ends.
-
Using the red and grey yarn make a pompom. Sew the pompom on the top of the hat. Of course, the pompom is optional and the hat is great without it too.
Why not make a set and knit a matching scarf? Have a look at His scarf pattern. It uses the same yarn (showed in a different color) and the same double thread technique. I'm sure you'll love it.
